Noob, Are You Ready to Learn to Ollie on your Skateboard?
|ROGER HANSEN
Learning to skateboard takes dedication.   If you want to learn fast, it helps if you have an order and a strategy.   Many new skateboarders try to learn to Ollie or learn to kickflip before they are ready.  They will try to Ollie before they can effectively push their skateboard or even do a kick turn.   This often leads to frustration and even giving up.   So, for you parents and Noobs out there, here is an outline of some of the very first things you should learn... SkaterTrainers + $1 To Make Your Own Balance Board
|ROGER HANSEN
SkaterTrainers make learning to ollie easier.  I have taught several kids who wouldn't even get close to landing their ollies and other tricks without skatertrainers.   Its really simple, its easier to learn new tricks without the wheels moving!Check out the SkaterTrainer balance board.   This is a fun twist and a way to work on your balance inside.    It works the same as a $100+ balance trainer (I have several), and only costs you $1 extra.    All you need is a $1 Three Liter bottle of soda.... Beginner Skateboarder Jon (9 yo) Tries SkaterTrainers to Learn Tricks
|ROGER HANSEN
Jon is a young beginner skateboarder at 9 years old.   Jon wanted to try out the SkaterTrainers like the other young skateboarders, so we got some footage.   He was working on his manual and several boneless attempts.   I know for a fact that he would have fallen in a few of these attempts, and even did a few times.   But, the skateboard never rolled out or slipped out from under him, so he was in control the entire time.   He plans to continue to learn... First Time User SkaterTrainer Response and Comments from Christian
|ROGER HANSEN
Here is Christian, a new skateboarder that is 13 years old.   Christian has been skating for less than a year, and already has a good Ollie that is getting better every day.   Christian was excited to get his own set of SkaterTrainers and agreed they would be a big help to him learning to ollie higher and straighter, as well as learning shove-its, kickflips, heelfips, and to improve his manuals.   This really is perfect timing for Christian to practice his skateboarding tricks with his set of SkaterTrainers.... SkaterTrainer Step by Step Ollie Picture Sequence with Dylan
|ROGER HANSEN
I got some cool pictures of Dylan landing an Ollie with his SkaterTrainers installed. These pictures demonstrate the timing, how to ollie step by step, and how Skater Trainers can help you ollie higher! It’s pretty simple, but the timing takes a lot of practice and effort to get down. The steps are basically Pop, Jump, Slide, and Land…but when you are just starting you know it is not that easy to get your Ollie.   SkaterTrainers can help you learn to Ollie anywhere and keep you from falling as much... Use SkaterTrainer's to Ollie Curbs and Set up Grinds
|ROGER HANSEN
This is Dylan again working on Ollie up curbs and Ollie-ing up ledges.   This can be helpful in learning how to grind and learning axel stalls.   The SkaterTrainers are useful, especially when you drop down off the ledge.   Dylan even does some 180's with the SkaterTrainers installed.   These types of moves are also fun if you have a pallet or a fun box in your garage on rainy days. Notice how SkaterTrainers allow full contact with the bottom of the board (boardslides and stalls) and allow... Read more...
SkaterTrainer Ollie, Heelflip, Pop Shove-It Demo from Dylan
|ROGER HANSEN
Here is some footage of Dylan demonstrating how to Ollie and How to heelflip with his SkaterTrainers at the Skatepark and talking about his thoughts on SkaterTrainers.  Dylan is a very solid vert, pool, and street skateboarder.  He really has fun trying new and bigger things with his SkaterTrainers.   Dylan is well past being a beginner skateboarder but is still learning every day. The first evening spent shooting videos, he thought of several new and fun ways to use the Skatertrainers, including ollie up onto ledges and off of... Read more...

Like most things, the answer is "It Depends".   Short answer, get a Skateboard or a Longboard.   You don’t need the top of the line, but you need one that is good enough to be safe and to not limit beginner performance. If they have any specific riding experience and ask for a specific board, then generally go with what they want.   Also what their friends have is very important, as you generally need a specific type of board for specific activity.   And always get quality components or...
